Quinta Essentia

Chenin Blanc 2015
Stellenbosch, South Africa, $39.99

“Full gold-tinged straw-yellow. Pungent aromas of pear, crab apple, wet wool and nuts, shading toward ripe yellow apple and gaining in sweetness with air; a bit like a Vouvray. At once supple and lively, with its orchard fruit and honeysuckle flavors framed by citrus and mineral elements. The nutty oak is a bit intrusive but there's also lovely sweetness and strong acidity here. In fact, this is a bit youthfully disjointed, as the skin contact aromas and flavors need to harmonize with the wine's penetrating acidity--or vice-versa. But seriously concentrated, tactile and long. Quinta Essentia is a joint venture established in 2015 by Washington state's Betz Family Winery, Carl van der Merwe, a leading winemaker in South Africa and Wendy Appelbaum, the owner of DeMorgenzon. 90.” Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2017.
