G.D Vajra Barolo “Bricco Delle Viole”
Piedmont, Italy, $79.99
G.D. Vajra is located in Piedmont in Northwest Italy. The winery sits at the highest elevation in the commune of Barolo, in a village called Vergne. G.D. Vajra has been one of Piedmonts hidden gems for ever and we are thankful to be a part of it. It was on the shelf opening day and it remains the one we reach for when looking to Piedmont.
Medium in body, with the persistent tannins that are so typical of this site, the 2015 Bricco Delle Viole Barolo is lithe, focused and full of energy. It will offer considerable appeal to readers who find some of the other 2015 Barolos too open and giving in their youthful stage. Kirsch, rose petal, mint and chalky notes build into a finely cut finish. Time in the glass softens some of the youthful, austere contours, but this remains a 2015 Barolo that needs time in bottle to be at its very best.
