Los Cantos Tempranillo
Ribera del Duero, Spain $17.99
About a week ago we tasted through sooo many wines, literally wine after wine, evaluating as we went. Unexplainably, on this particular day, nothing was tasting good. Cork after cork, nothing excited us. We were to the point of questioning ourselves when up from the wine bag rose an old and faithful standard, Los Cantos. This new vintage walked in and it was as if it instantly turned on all the lights and cranked the music making clear to all that it had arrived.
We were floored by the presence of this certified organically grown "Demeter" status wine. We couldn't wait for the day it would come in. Guess what, today is that day!
"Los Cantos" means river stones, and the talented folks at Finca Torremilanos use them to distinguish their five parcels situated two kilometers, one might say a cantos’ throw, south of the river Duero. Produced by the only Demeter certified biodynamic in Ribera del Duero, the Los Cantos consists of organically farmed Tempranillo with a bit of Merlot blended in (very typical for this region, where Merlot was originally introduced from Bordeaux in the 19th century. With well-sited vineyards in Arranda del Duero, as well as their own in-house cooperage, Finca Torremilanos is well placed to make very good wines, and this bottling is one of the more original and tasty examples from this region we have tasted in recent memory. There is a freshness and admirable cut to the wine's dark and red fruit flavors, with a stony mineral quality that sets it apart from its peers at this price point.
Grilled lamb chops is traditional here, but this wine would pair beautifully with roasted sweet peppers, marcona almonds and manchego cheese. Salud!
