Primitivio di Manduria 2014
90 Pts. Smart Buy & TOP 100 List 2016 Wine Spectator
“There’s a rich, mouthfilling quality to this medium-bodied red, offering a velvety mix of spiced cherry, mulberry and herbed olive, with accents of mocha and graphite. Plush tannins show on the juicy finish."
Antica Masseria del Sigillo was founded in Guagnano in 1989 with the idea of producing hand crafted wines in an area that had been taken over by large industrial operations. This small batched, 100% Primitivo is sourced from estate vineyards growing on layers of limestone and clay, not the typical sandy soils found further south. After a temperature controlled stainless steel fermentation, the wine was racked into large volume used barrels (botti) for 6 months. Aside from the wine’s stunning fruit, and remarkable freshness, I have never sampled a Primitivo with such a controlled and “elegant” tannin.
